  1. Thank you for your interest in Search and Replace!
  2.  
  3. Create a directory and copy all the files on disk into it.  If you are running 
  4. Windows 95 or NT, create a shortcut to SR32.EXE.  Windows 3.1x users, add SR.EXE
  5. to a group in the Program Manager.
  6.  
  7. The SR.ZIP file contains the latest version of Search and Replace for Windows (sr.exe), as well 
  8. as the 32-bit version of Search and Replace (sr32.exe).  The 32-bit version runs on Windows NT 
  9. and Windows 95, and was tested on VFAT (Windows 95's file system), and NTFS (Windows NT's 
  10. optional, more secure file system).
  11.  
  12. New features in v2.6-2.62 include:
  13. - Strings displayed before and after the Search strings (for clipboard copy and 
  14.   Output File) are now configurable.
  15. - The Read-Only replace prompt now allows a Yes to All option.  Problems writing
  16.   to files opened by other applications are now logged and processing continues.
  17. - A problem with character 255 in Regular Expression ranges [] was fixed
  18. - Statistics for Search and Replace are now displayed (at the bottom).
  19. - Egrep-style regular expression support for Search and Replace (for syntax 
  20.   details see Help file).
  21.   Main differences are: 
  22.   ^.$ operators are not (yet) supported
  23.   *+? operator must precede an expression enclosed by () or [] (such as *[123] 
  24.       or +(Windows)).  Otherwise, the operator is assumed to match any/all 
  25.       characters from beginning of line or to the end of the line.
  26.   [0-9] will span all numbers (whereas egrep only matches the first one).  
  27.         To match only one, use ?[0-9].
  28.  
  29. - Some problems with read-only files on a network were resolved.
  30. - Some speed improvements were made in the 32-bit version (sr32.exe).
  31. - Error messages mention the file name.
  32. - A Setup executable is now provided for the registered version.
  33. - Command-line arguments (for running from a DOS shell) are be supported for 
  34.   some settings (see help file - Contents).
  35. - File currently processed will be displayed on the main window.

  37. New features in v2.5-2.54 include:
  38. - A display bug in the Windows version which showed line numbers, but no line 
  39.   detail on certain lines for large files.
  40. - 32-bit version (SR32.exe) now uses the Registry instead of SR.INI file to 
  41.   store and retrieve information.
  42. - Application can now be used as a File Find utility by not inputting a Search 
  43.   String.
  44. - Efficiency and size improvements.
  45. - Improved help file
  46. - A utility for moving the search history information from the SR.INI file to 
  47.   the Windows 95/NT registry(where the program reads it from).  This utility 
  48.   is not included in the release but it can be downloaded from 
  49.   http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/funduc and from various forums
  50.   on CompuServe (Search for INI2REG.ZIP).  It is called INI2REG and it is FREEWARE.
  51. - Credit card ordering information is now available.  Also, the homepage URL 
  52.   is now included in the documentation and the E-MAIL address for customer support 
  53.   is also in the documentation and the About dialog.
  54. - About dialog clearly identifies whether the application is meant to run in Windows 
  55.   95/NT or 3.1x.
  56.   Also, the Windows 3.1x application no longer runs under Windows 95/NT to avoid 
  57.   misuse which could result in loss of long filename support.
  58. - Menu items were added (both in main menu and pop-up) to allow users to Open with 
  59.   Default Viewer rather than Associated Viewer.  
  60.   Also, menu items (both in main menu and pop-up) were added to allow opening a 
  61.   file with a viewer the user selects.
  62. - Mnemonics problem was fixed in the Main Window (Alt+T was used for Srch String 
  63.   and Touch).  Also, mnemonics were added to the View Context Window buttons.
  64. - A limit of 3000 files processed was removed from the Windows 95/NT version 
  65.   (SR32.EXE).  The Windows 3.1x version (SR.EXE) still can process only 3000 
  66.   files at a time.
  67. - The View Context window now remembers the position you left it in.  Also, the 
  68.   Page Up button is always disabled when at the top of the file.
  69. - The character '_' is now a valid word character for the Whole Word Only feature.  
  70.   For example, if you Search for "DEBUG" with Whole Word Only on, the program 
  71.   will not find any "_DEBUG" lines, only the ones with the word "DEBUG".
  72. - A Use Binary Codes mode which allows you to enter tab and linefeed characters 
  73.   (as well as any other) binary characters by using the special character "\".  
  74.   Example:  Search String: #include "stdafx.h"\r\n#include "sr.h"
  75.            Replace String: #include <stdafx.h>\r\n#include "srreg.h"
  76.   You can now enter a string as follows: "\0xa3\0x09abc".  
  77.   A character picker dialog is provided to save you from having to use an ASCII 
  78.   chart.  See the "..." buttons next to the Search and Replace Strings.
  79.   When you run a binary mode Search/Replace, the found string is shown in a 
  80.   rectangle (because non-printable characters are not displayed, you cannot see 
  81.   where they are).
  82. - The help file is updated with the latest features.
  83. - In Windows 95, the SR icon now appears on the Task bar.
  84. - The Select Path dialog now shows long directory names.

  86. Features planned for future releases include:

  88. - More than one Search/Replace strings and files selected by you for processing 
  89.   will be compiled into a script to be executed by the program.
  90. - Remaining regular expression operators will be supported.
  91. - Exclude masks will be processed.
  92. - A View Context for binary files will be provided.
